There’s no secret to reaching your potential in the workplace, but with a little experimentation, hard work and the thoughtful combination of ingredients, you can cook up success – pizza style.
Step 1.
Start with a good base.
Just like a great pizza base, it’s important to start with the basics. Starting work on time, checking your emails regularly, and keeping yourself organised sound like minor tasks, but it’s often the small things that get the better of us. Thin crust or thick and delicious – it’s the little things that determine the quality of your base.
Step 2.
Add a bit of special sauce.
In the workplace, the sauce for your pizza refers to your own unique skills and expertise. Basically, it’s what you bring to your role that sets you apart from your colleagues and makes you a valuable addition to your team.
Your skills bring variety and spice to your workplace. Like all great recipes, they need regular updating and tweaking for overall improvement. Spend 15 minutes every morning reading an article relevant to your field to stay updated with industry trends, and try to identify areas of improvement in your own skill set.
Step 3.
Vary your toppings.
The best thing about making your own pizza is that you can try lots of different toppings. Similarly, in any field of work you have numerous opportunities to try something different or work on a new challenge.
Look for opportunities and challenge yourself. Get out of your comfort zone and take up a task that’s new and sure to keep you on your toes. These opportunities are a great chance for growth, and you will be noticed for taking them on.
Step 4.
Tie your ingredients together.
No pizza is worthy of its name without lots of cheese to bind it all together. In the working world, cheese represents communication. Vital to a successful working environment, communication unites all of your ingredients and makes sure things don’t fall apart and, well, taste bad.
As an employee, you need to ensure you are communicating with your colleagues. Give your team status updates or flag an issue at the earliest possible stage. The more you communicate with your team, the easier it is to gain their trust and confidence in your work.
Step 5.
Add the final touches.
You’ve built a strong base, added variety and been generous with your communication. Most people would consider that a successful pizza, but not you, you’re committed to going that extra mile and reaching your full potential, right? Right!
One way to add that final touch is to always ‘under’ promise but over deliver. What that means is you not only complete your tasks, but you complete any additional work that hasn’t been asked of you, bringing that extra bit of zest to your pizza and improving its flavour.
Step 6.
Learn from your mistakes and refine your recipe.
Always remember that a great tasting pizza is one you’re passionate about, so monitor it regularly to ensure it’s not under or over cooked.
Learn from your mistakes and if you feel you’ve missed out any ingredients and see room for improvement, don’t worry, you can always try again.
